In 1974, Belgian painter Joseph Willaert created a series of large format letters which he exhibited in the recently opened Ghent art gallery Elsa von Honolulu Loringhoven.

This exhibition displays eight of Willaert’s letter paintings. The painted letters are all the same size. The text in blue oil paint on canvas refers to the ink of the original letters. Research has revealed that at least six of these letters are copies of the original letters. So they are not just remarkable paintings, but also unique sources of art history. We can go more deeply into the history of the letter paintings and give a brief biography of the artist.
